Standard Free Minecraft Account Compared to Premium Accounts

Everyone is now able to create a free Minecraft account. 

Simply visit Notch's official website, and click register at the top-right corner of the page. Not only you will be able to play the Minecraft demo, but you will also be able to play Mojang's other two games ( not as good as the first ), as now accounts are synchronized between all three.

What are the differences between a free and a premium account ?

Well this limits to 3 simple facts. You will get access to play online, on thousands of servers around the world, you'll be able to change the default character skin with a custom one of your like, and you will be automatically updated to the latest version released. It might not sound much, but after I'll explain each one, you'll understand their value.

On a game that constantly generates grounds, always playing by yourself can get kinda' lonely. Playing online, you can meet new people, learn new things, new techniques, and also build faster, with the help of a co-worker. 

Also, you'll be able to host your own server, and play with your friends, as long as the also have premium rights. Third party developers created thousands of Minecraft Sever mods, that enhance the gameplay, adding races, a monetary system, personal chest locks, personal block protection, quests, and many others.

When playing with many others, you will feel the need to look unique, have a signature. This is achievable with a custom skin. You can either download one from the internet ( lack of originality ) or create your own. 

There are skin editors that can be found online, but I simply like to get the original character template from the official Minecraft website, edit it in Microsoft Paint, and then upload it back for use. Something annoying about skins is that armors can cover them, and since armors are vital most of the time, you'll have to wear them.


If you ever played heavily modded games like The Elder Scrolls Series, you know how much time you can lose with manual updates, and how much a mod manager can help you. Notch constantly and often adds new data to the game, and by manual updating you would reduce the amount of fun MC can provide.

Can I get a full featured free Minecraft account ?

You will probably now be able to create a premium Mojang account without paying, but nobody said you need a premium account to play Minecraft at full potential. Since you can't connect to Notch's server, you'll have to manual update ( when the new version is posted by someone ) and live without customized skins ( as I said, armors cover them, so you won't suffer much).

Other than that, with a cracked version of Minecraft and by using a software called Hamachi ( developed by LogMeIn ) you can trick the game engine into thinking you are connecting via LAN with other players, therefore not playing online. The "server.proprieties" file from the Minecraft server folder ( on the host's PC ) must be modified : the IP of the server ("server-ip" line) must be the IP of the host's Hamachi account, and the "online-mode" line must be set to "false". After these requirements are met, all the players that joined the host's Hamachi network can connect to his server.
